How to Fix a Dishwasher That Won't Drain

Technical Guide 15 Min Repair
1

Clear the Filter

Most drainage issues start at the base. Twist the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub counter-clockwise and lift. Rinse under hot water to remove grease and food particles. Check the sump area beneath the filter for any solid debris like glass shards or bones.

2

Inspect the Drain Hose

Check the corrugated plastic hose connecting your dishwasher to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Ensure there are no sharp kinks. If you recently installed a new disposal, ensure the knockout plug was removed before the hose was attached.

3

Check the Air Gap

If your sink has a small chrome cylinder on top, that's the air gap. Unscrew the cover and check for blockages. A buildup of debris here can prevent the dishwasher from pumping water out effectively due to air pressure issues.

4

Examine the Drain Pump

Listen for the pump during the drain cycle. If it hums but doesn't move water, the impeller might be jammed. Access the pump from the bottom front panel. Use a multimeter to check for continuity if the pump shows no signs of life.

5

Clear the Garbage Disposal

Your dishwasher often drains through your disposal. If the disposal is full of food waste, it acts as a plug. Run the disposal with plenty of water to ensure the path is clear before starting a dishwasher cycle.

6

Verify the Control Board

If all hardware is clear, the timer or control board might be failing to signal the drain pump. Reset the dishwasher by unplugging it for 5 minutes. If the issue persists, the board may need professional diagnostic testing.
